Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas which is produced in the body naturally, and it’s responsible for communication between cells. It is produced through a process where arginine (which is an amino acid) is broken down by enzymes in the body. This is according to Jim White who is a dietician and the spokesman of American Dietetic Association. Some of the supplements of nitric oxide can be naturally obtained from foods such as shrimp, sesame seeds, crab, white meat turkey and spinach among others.

Uses of Nitric Oxide

As stated earlier, the main use of Nitric Oxide is to enhance communication between cells in the body. However, it also has an important role in regulating the circulation of blood in the body. Moreover, it also controls the functions of some organs such as the lungs, kidneys, liver, stomach, brains and other vital organs in the body. Nitric Oxide also has an effect on the release of adrenaline and other hormones. It also takes part in the acceleration of growth and recovery time apart from increasing the flow of blood. This enables it to ensure the efficient delivery of essential nutrients to muscles and thus contributing to their growth.
Many athletes use Nitric Oxide because they believe that it improves their stamina and as a result they workout more and for a longer time but there is no tangible evidence to support this theory. However, a study conducted in 2010 encourages the use of nitric oxide supplements by older men. This study was conducted by a researcher from the University of California at Los Angeles. It entailed the examination of 16 male cyclists who were between the ages of 50 and 73 years. Some of them were given nitric oxide supplements which contained arginine and other antioxidants. The men who used the nitric oxide supplements recorded an increase in their anaerobic threshold by 16.7%. Anaerobic threshold can be defined as the point at which accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles begin. This was the net increase after a period of three weeks. On the other hand, those men who were given the placebo recorded no increase in their anaerobic thresholds.

Associated risks

According to White, the main risk associated with nitric oxide supplement or any other amino acid-based product is an overdose. Too much arginine comes with its side effects such as body weakness, nausea, and diarrhea. Always consult your doctor or a qualified medical professional before taking this or any other supplement.
